Mike Santana defeated Trick Williams in the main event of Bound for Glory on Sunday night to become the new TNA World Champion.
The victory, which makes Santana the first TNA World Champion of Puerto Rican heritage, was followed by a chaotic scene involving attempted championship cash-ins by both Nic Nemeth and Frankie Kazarian.
The match began with an intense brawl on the floor before the bell officially rang, sparked by Williams delivering his own insulting ring introduction.
After fighting into the crowd, Williams gained an advantage at ringside by striking Santana with the TNA World Championship belt.
Once the match was officially underway, Williams controlled the early action. He later catapulted Santana head-first into the ring post, causing Santana to bleed from the forehead. The momentum shifted after Williams went to the ringside to taunt Santana’s daughter, who responded by slapping Williams, allowing Santana to recover and attack.
The final minutes of the match saw multiple near falls, including Santana hitting a 450 splash. After interference from Williams’ lawyer, Williams hit an avalanche uranage for a two-count.
Santana dealt with the lawyer before being hit by Williams’ Trick Shot for another near fall. Santana ultimately secured the victory after hitting a series of discus lariats for the pinfall.
As TNA President Carlos Silva entered to present the championship, Nic Nemeth’s music hit for a Call Your Shot cash-in attempt. Before he could act, the lights went out and Elias appeared, hitting Nemeth with a guitar. Frankie Kazarian then ran to the ring to attempt his own cash-in, but was taken out by Santana.
After the chaos subsided, Santana celebrated in the ring with his daughter, who had been seated in the front row, to close the show.
